Artist Statement

A white world stretches as far as the eye can reach.
Here, ice exists on a scale beyond human measure.

Rugged peaks and blue ice carry the weight of deep time, shaped by katabatic winds across the frozen continent.
The wind scours the snow, burns the surface clean, and quietly rewrites the land.

What remains is an accumulation of time, rendered in stillness.
A vast world, without sound.
As the weather shifts, the boundary between sky and earth thins,
and the horizon softens into uncertainty.

Yet what truly overwhelmed me was the view from above.

The scale and mass I thought I understood on the ground
revealed themselves as only fragments of Antarctica.

Light changes without pause.
Nameless ranges appear, fade, and return,
their outlines dissolving at the edge of cloud and wind,
suspended between presence and erasure.

At the moment I reached toward the continent's highest peak,
a torrent of freezing wind lifted the summits into cloud,
and the land slipped back into whiteness.

見渡す限りに広がる白の世界。そこには、人のスケールをはるかに超えた氷の存在があった。

切り立つ山々、百万年という時間を刻み込んだブルーアイス。
それらすべてを形づくっているのが、この大陸に吹き下ろすカタバ風だ。
風は雪を削り、氷を磨き、静かに大地の表情を書き換え続けている。

そこにあるのは、圧倒的な時間の積み重ねと、音のない白銀の世界。
ひとたび天候が崩れると、空と大地の境界は失われ、すべてが白へと溶け込んでいく。
地平は消え、視界の奥行きは曖昧になる。
そのため、飛行機の離着陸でさえ、いつ飛び立ち、いつ着地したのか判然としない瞬間が生まれる。

だが、私が本当に圧倒されたのは、空から見た南極大陸の姿だった。
地上で体験し、理解したつもりでいたスケールや質量が、
この大陸のごく一部に触れただけに過ぎなかったことを突きつけられた。

光は刻々と変わり、
名もなき山の連なりは、生成と崩壊のあいだに宙づりにされた身振りとして立ち現れる。
大陸の最高峰に触れようとしたその瞬間、
凍てつく風の奔流が雲を呼び、山々は白さの中へ消えた。

Mitsuaki Fujiwara is a photographer with a background in documentary filmmaking, based in Japan.

Moving beyond conventional landscape photography, Fujiwara approaches the Earth as a living entity shaped by planetary processes. Through restrained monochrome tones and deep shadows, his work traces wind, pressure, and geological time, revealing surfaces that feel less like scenery and more like presence.

His work moves between extreme environments and intimate human moments — children, everyday lives — allowing fragile presence to exist within forces far larger than themselves.

藤原光暁は、ドキュメンタリー映像制作を背景に持つ日本在住の写真家。

抑制されたモノクロームと深い影を通して、風、圧力、地質学的時間の痕跡を可視化し、途方もない時間と圧倒的な質量を宿した地球の表面を描き出す。

極限環境から子どもたちや日常の人間的な瞬間まで、その視線は常に、人智を超えた力の中にある小さな命の確かさへと向かっている。
